Shillong, March 4: In a proud moment for Meghalaya, nine athletes from the Muaythai Association of Meghalaya (MTAM) have been selected to represent India at the prestigious IFMA Senior Men’s & Women’s World Muaythai Championship Elite & U-23, scheduled to be held from May 22 to June 1, 2025, in Kemer, Antalya, Turkey. Alongside the athletes, one official from the association will accompany the team.
Often referred to as the Art of Eight Limbs, Muaythai has been steadily gaining popularity in the state, with several athletes from Meghalaya making their mark on the international stage in recent years. However, despite their achievements, the athletes are facing financial challenges that could hinder their participation in the upcoming championship.In an appeal to the government and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs, the association expressed their struggle to meet the expenses required for the tournament. They urged the authorities to extend financial assistance to help the athletes fulfill their dream of representing the state and the country at the global event.With the upcoming championship in Turkey, the athletes are hopeful that the state government will once again come forward to support them in their quest to bring laurels to Meghalaya and India on the global stage.
