SHILLONG, March 6: Information and Public Relations (IPR) Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, on Wednesday, stressed that the Directorate of Information and Public Relations’ (DIPR) role in governance is of utmost importance.
She was speaking at a conclave on ‘Emerging Trends in Public Communication – Redefining the Role of DIPR’, held at the State Convention Centre here.
“We have a prime responsibility to be the multiplier of information, empowering citizens by providing them with the knowledge they need to avail the various schemes and resources available to them,” she said.
The IPR minister also highlighted DIPR’s strategic importance in governance, calling for a more dynamic and impactful approach in facilitating the flow of information that enables transparency, accountability, and citizen participation.
Emphasising that the role of DIPR needs to be redefined, she said, “In today’s fast-paced world, it is crucial that the department adapts to the changing dynamics of communication, ensuring that government initiatives and schemes reach the last mile — to every citizen, regardless of their location.”
The minister went on to explain that the DIPR plays a central role in informing citizens about the various government schemes available to them. “While these schemes can often be seen, the true strength of the DIPR is its ability to disseminate information widely and effectively. It is not always about being visible, but about ensuring that the message is received, understood, and acted upon,” she remarked.
The DIPR conclave was also attended by Dr Shakil P Ahammed, Additional Chief Secretary as guest of honour and Patricia Mukhim, Editor of The Shillong Times as a special guest, besides Vijay Kumar Mantri, Commissioner and Secretary, IPR, BS Sohliya, Secretary and Director of I&PR, and other departmental officials.
