SHILLONG, March 6: The Congress party’s dismal performance in the recently concluded Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) elections has left its lone MLA and last-standing legislator, Ronnie V Lyngdoh, visibly disappointed. However, sources indicate that Lyngdoh may not remain a solitary figure in the party for much longer, as he is considering switching allegiance to the ruling National People’s Party (NPP).
According to a reliable party source, Lyngdoh has sent feelers to the NPP leadership, expressing his interest in joining the party. However, the final decision rests with the senior leaders, particularly Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
It is worth mentioning that Lyngdoh had previously been asked whether he would remain with the Congress despite its turbulent phase. At the time, he had stated that his decision would be guided by the wishes of his constituents. “I am not here to work for myself, but for my people,” he had said, adding that he will do whatever his people ask him to do.
If Lyngdoh does make the switch, it would mark yet another setback for the Congress in Meghalaya, which has been struggling to retain its foothold in the state’s political landscape.
