Drama and debates
Who said high drama was reserved for TV soap operas? The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly has proven time and again that politics too can be packed with enough theatrics to rival a prime-time serial. Assembly sessions often bring out the dramatic flair in our elected representatives, and they don’t hold back.
While society often (unfairly) associates “drama” with women, the men in the Assembly seem determined to reclaim that label. From sulking to snarky remarks and emotional outbursts, the male-dominated House can sometimes resemble a heated family reunion gone wrong. Meanwhile, the lone female cabinet minister is often seen calmly navigating that storm.
True equality, perhaps? Women’s Day, this and that…
Ah yes, Women’s Day, that one day in the year when women are showered with flowers, praised in long-winded speeches, and celebrated like superheroes. Meghalaya did its part, organising programmes across the state to applaud its superwomen. But here’s a reality check, ask any woman, and 19 out of 20 will tell you the same thing that they do not need the ‘superhuman’ tag but instead just want to be treated like humans. Fair enough, especially in a state where a troubling 32% of reported crimes are against women.
So while the flowers may wither and the speeches may fade, what truly matters is creating a world where respect and safety aren’t reserved for just one day a year. After all, women shouldn’t have to be seen as superheroes just to survive the everyday battles.
