Training on sustainable farming in WJH

SHILLONG, March 12: An off-campus training on ‘Sustainable Plant Health Management for Organic Turmeric production’ was successfully conducted for Community-Based Organizations (CBOs) in Mookyndeng village, Laskein Block, in West Jaintia Hills, by the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBMA) in collaboration with the National Institute of Plant Health Management (NIPHM).
The training programme was funded by the National Horticulture Board, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, under the Horticulture Cluster Development Programme.
Training was imparted to more than 60 officials and representatives from MBMA and CBOs operating in Laskein and Thadlaskein blocks of the district. The training emphasised the importance of adopting sustainable and organic farming practices to ensure high-quality produce of Lakadong Turmeric.
The training programme concluded with interactive sessions, where participants shared their experiences and discussed challenges faced in turmeric cultivation. The two SMEs — Dr N Lavanya, SO (BPBC) and Dr K Damodara Chari, ASO-microbiology from NIPHM — provided hands-on guidance and solutions, ensuring that the learning outcomes would translate into practical applications on the field.
