Seven illegal Bangladeshi immigrants held in Delhi-NCR
NEW DELHI, March 17: The Delhi Police has detained seven illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, including a minor from east Delhi, and initiated their deportation process, an official said on Monday.The detained people, Dilawar Khan (48), Beauty Begum (39), Rafikul (43), Tauhid (20), Md Azhar (28), Zakir Malik (40) and a 15-year-old minor girl, allegedly entered India illegally through river routes.“They were residing at various locations in Delhi and Ghaziabad. Deportation process has been initiated with the assistance of the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO),” the police said in a statement. On March 16, acting on a tip-off, the police detained a man identified as Dilawar Khan from Krishna Nagar area. Upon initial interrogation, he claimed to be a resident of West Bengal but sustained questioning and verification revealed his identity as a Bangladeshi national.Consequently, police identified six more Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in different parts of Delhi-NCR adding that further investigation is underway. The ongoing drive against illegal immigrants was launched last December. The police intensified their efforts after a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the chief minister in February. (PTI)
Monk among two killed in road accident in Bengal
HOWRAH, March 17: A monk from Bharat Sevashram Sangha and his disciple were killed, while four others sustained injuries in a road accident in West Bengal’s Howrah district on Monday, police said.The accident occurred when the pickup truck they were travelling lost control, crossed a divider and collided with a lorry coming from the opposite direction on National Highway 16 at Bagnan.The deceased have been identified as Subhankar Nanda Maharaj (56) and devotee Vasudev Mandal (60), police added.The pickup truck was going towards Kharagpur when the incident took place, police added. Woman killed over witchcraft allegations
RANCHI, March 17: In a shocking incident fuelled by superstition, a 50-year-old woman was murdered in Jharkhand’s Gumla over allegations of practising witchcraft and her body was found buried in the sand on the banks of the Khatwa river, officials said. The police recovered the body on Monday and arrested the prime accused, Karmpal Lakra, who has confessed to the crime.The deceased woman had been missing for four days. Her son had lodged a missing report.Suspecting foul play, he expressed concerns that his mother might have been targeted due to accusations of witchcraft.Acting on the complaint, the police launched an investigation using a dog squad. During the search, a slipper and a towel believed to belong to the missing woman were found near the Khatwa river. Based on these clues and local inquiries, the police detained Lakra, a neighbour of the victim, for questioning.Upon interrogation, Lakra confessed to the crime, revealing that he had killed the woman and buried her body in the sand near the riverbank. Following his confession, the police exhumed the body and sent it for a post-mortem examination. (IANS)
