Duo apprehended with arms & elephant meat

SHILLONG, March 27: Villagers of Mawpdeng, near the Assam-Meghalaya border under Umsiang Outpost, on Wednesday apprehended two individuals in possession of weapons and dry elephant meat.
According to Ri-Bhoi police, the villagers had detained Qurenius Muktieh (27) and Jethril Umbah (32) along with two country-made weapons and dry elephant meat.
The suspects were later rescued and sent for medical examination, while the seized weapons and meat have been sent for forensic examination.
Forest officials from Sonapur Range under Kamrup East Division, Basistha, Guwahati, reported two elephant deaths since November 2024—the first recorded last year and another in March this year.
The two individuals are suspected of involvement in poaching.
