SHILLONG, March 27: The state government has assured consumers that their grievances regarding inflated electricity bills will be addressed and has urged them to formally register complaints. The assurance came on Thursday amid growing concerns over unexpectedly high power bills.
Power Minister AT Mondal, addressing the issue, stated, “We have clarified many times that if there are cases of inflated bills, they should be reported to the concerned Assistant Wiring Director (AWD) from the revenue section, and we will look into them.”
He acknowledged that in some instances, the higher-than-expected bills were due to previous underbilling. He explained that any accumulated excess remains in the meter, and when a new meter reader takes over, the discrepancy becomes evident.
“There are such cases as well. We urge all consumers to bring these issues to our notice, and we will address them,” Mondal added.
His statement comes in response to mounting public dissatisfaction, with many residents alleging unexplained surges in their electricity bills. The recently concluded budget session of the State Assembly also saw members raising concerns about inflated bills and calling on the government to intervene.
While the government has reiterated its commitment to resolving complaints, it remains to be seen whether the corrective measures will be enough to reassure consumers.
