Lamare SC win Maitshaphrang Cup football tournament

Nongpoh, April 3: Lamare Sports Club clinched the Maitshaphrang Cup title with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Sumer Sports Club in the final on Thursday. The tournament, organized by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Umsning Circle, was held at the Umsning Patarim football ground.
The Maitshaphrang Cup, an initiative of KSU Umsning Circle, aims to promote football in the state while raising awareness against drug abuse under the theme “Say No to Drugs.” The event provides a platform for young athletes to showcase their talent while reinforcing the importance of a drug-free society.
The final match was graced by several dignitaries, including Hamletson Dohling, President of the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA), Lambokstarwell Marngar, President of KSU Central Body (guest of honor), Ferdynald Kharkamni, President of KSU North Khasi Hills District, Lester Nongbet, President of KSU Umsning Circle, and other esteemed guests.
In a high-intensity final, Lamare SC took an early lead in the first half, while Sumer SC struggled to capitalize on their opportunities despite a fiercely contested game witnessed by thousands of passionate football fans.
The second half saw Sumer SC stage a determined comeback, netting an equalizer to push the match into a penalty shootout. Lamare SC held their nerve, triumphing 5-4 in the tie-breaker to claim the championship.
As champions, Lamare SC received a cash prize of ₹5 lakh along with the prestigious trophy, while runners-up Sumer SC were awarded ₹3 lakh and a trophy. Individual accolades, including Best Goalkeeper, Best Player of the Tournament, and Top Scorer awards, were also presented.
