SHILLONG, April 17: The High Court of Meghalaya recorded a decrease in the pendency of civil and criminal cases at the end of March compared to February.
At the beginning of March, the High Court had a total of 956 pending cases, comprising 747 civil cases and 209 criminal cases. During the month, 86 new cases were instituted — 59 civil and 27 criminal.
In the same period, the court disposed of 108 cases, including 73 civil and 35 criminal matters. As a result, by the end of March, the total number of pending cases stood at 934, with 733 civil and 201 criminal cases.
According to the monthly case statement, this reflects an overall decrease of 3.30% in case pendency compared to the previous month. Specifically, civil case pendency dropped by 1.87%, while criminal case pendency decreased by 3.98%.
Notably, the High Court disposed of six cases that were over five years old in March. However, 79 cases which are more than five years old remain on the docket.
