SHILLONG, April 27: Every year, the Seng Samla Umpling felicitates young people from the Shnong for academic excellence and also for excelling in the field of sports, music etc. This year, two youths received special recognition — Meshuwa Kupar Mawthoh for passing the Meghalaya Civil Service (MCS) and Wallamsuk Laloo for passing the Meghalaya Police Service (MPS) examinations.
On Saturday, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner RM Kurbah, who was the chief guest at the function, lauded the Shnong for recognising talent but also emphasised that all the honour should go to the parents for bringing up their children in the right spirit. She said that mothers deserve credit for being the first to be up in the morning and the last to go to bed because they have responsibilities to discharge;
Kurbah also encouraged the parents to be more open and keep the communication lines with their children open because if there is no openness, children will seek outside help. Addressing the youth Kurbah said, “Medicine and engineering studies are not the ultimate options. Today there are several areas that the youth can excel in and find career options.”
Kurbah also stated that in Umpling she found the Dorbar Shnong, the Seng Samla and Seng Longkmie are like three strong pillars who support the youth in their all round development.
Umpling Rangbah Shnong, SF Pyngrope while applauding the youth who were felicitated paid special tributes to Kong Pyrtalin Lyngdoh and her team for keeping night vigil in the locality to prevent any wrongdoing. He said Umpling is fortunate to have such self-sacrificing people who generously give of themselves to ensure that there is safety and security in the shnong.
