Pakistani police hunt suspect in Ahmadi doctor’s killing
Lahore, May 19: Pakistani police are searching for the suspect in the killing of a doctor from the country’s Ahmadi minority, the latest in a series of deadly attacks targeting the community. The doctor was shot down at a private hospital in Sargodha, with the gunman fleeing the scene. The Ahmadi religion, an offshoot of Islam, was declared non-Muslims in 1974. There are about 500,000 Ahmadis in Pakistan, a nation of 250 million. Supporters of Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan have carried out many attacks on Ahmadis, accusing them of blasphemy. The motive behind the killing of Dr Sheikh Mahmood remains unclear, and an investigation is ongoing. This is the third attack on Ahmadis in Pakistan since April. Amir Mahmood, a spokesman for the Ahmadi community, urged the government to protect Ahmadis, whose places of worship and graveyards are often desecrated by extremist Sunni groups.(AP)
