SHILLONG, May 26: The police have classified the case involving a masked man molesting schoolgirls in Umsohsun as a Special Registration (SR) case due to its sensitive nature, even as a manhunt has been launched to identify and arrest the masked suspect.
“We are treating this as an SR case because of the seriousness involved,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police, Vivek Syiem told reporters on Monday.
He added that the CCTV cell is currently reviewing additional surveillance cameras in the surrounding areas to gather more evidence.
The SP urged the public for assistance in identifying the suspect.
“Anyone with information about the suspect can contact the police control room or dial 112. Informants are not required to reveal their identity,” he said.
Syiem emphasized the importance of public cooperation, stating, “Even the slightest clue about this individual’s identity could help us apprehend him and bring the case to its logical conclusion.”
Replying to a query, he said that this is the first time the district police has encountered such a case.
“We have dealt with molestation cases before, but never one involving a suspect who targets juveniles, particularly schoolgirls, early in the morning,” he said.
The police have already recorded the statements of the victims. A formal case has been registered at Lumdiengjri police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
