Karachi blaze injures six, wrecks factories
KARACHI, June 9: A fire in Karachi has left six people injured and three factories damaged, even after 30 hours. The fire broke out in the Landhi export processing zone and spread rapidly, engulfing the factory due to the presence of combustible material. The fire has not been fully controlled, and more time is required to bring it under control. Factory fires are common in industrial zones of Karachi, where most factories lack proper ventilation, safety measures, and equipment. In 2012, a fire in Baldia town killed at least 258 people. A fire safety audit conducted on 265 commercial buildings in the city found that none had a fire safety certificate or a no-objection certificate issued by the fire brigade department. (PTI)
