Birmingham, June 26: After a dismal showing by the lower order in the first Test at Headingley, the Indian team management is likely to make changes to its batting line-up for the second Test against England, starting July 2 at Edgbaston. The decision follows widespread criticism of India’s tail-end batting, which contributed significantly to their five-wicket defeat despite being in a dominant position for most of the match.
India’s lower order, once known for offering stiff resistance, crumbled under pressure in Leeds. Their failure to support the top and middle order resulted in collapses in both innings, prompting calls for a fresh approach as the series moves forward.
Among the key changes expected is the inclusion of Nitish Kumar Reddy, a promising batting all-rounder, who may come in as a like-for-like replacement for Shardul Thakur. Reddy’s ability to contribute with both bat and ball could offer India better balance and depth, especially in overseas conditions.
Meanwhile, there is a strong case for the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav, with several former cricketers, including Sunil Gavaskar and Stuart Broad, suggesting that the wrist-spinner could be effective on a pitch that might assist spin in the latter stages of the match. Kuldeep could come in at the expense of a seamer, with Thakur again the most likely to make way. (Agencies)
