SHILLONG, June 28: The traffic density along the Umiam–Shillong road has become significantly high, leaving the state government with no option but to expand the existing road.
Sources revealed that the earlier plan to construct an elevated road from Umiam to Shillong was found to be unfeasible, as the estimated cost was around Rs 300 crore for a proposed length of approximately 28 km.
The NHIDCL has submitted a second proposal for a similar road between Umiam and Shillong, but there is little likelihood that it will be approved by the NHIDCL headquarters.
With limited alternatives, the only viable solution now is to widen the existing road — a plan recently confirmed by Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong.
Currently, the width of the Umiam-Shillong road is 7 meters. The proposed plan aims to increase it to 10 meters.
The NHIDCL is expected to conduct the necessary survey for the alignment and expansion of the existing road soon.
