SHILLONG, July 2: A delegation from the Executive Committee of the Rynjah Dorbar Shnong met Public Health Engineering (PHE) Minister Marcuise N. Marak on Wednesday, urging him to take immediate action to address the growing problem of water scarcity in the locality.
The delegation was led by Rangbah Shnong Eddie War and accompanied by former KHADC Chief Executive Member (CEM) Pyniaid Sing Syiem, who played a key role in facilitating the meeting. Members of the Executive Committee of the Dorbar Shnong were also part of the delegation.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, War expressed satisfaction with the Minister’s positive response. The PHE Minister assured the delegation that a team of officials, led by the Chief Engineer, will soon conduct an inspection of the area.
War pointed out a significant gap between the locality’s water demand and the actual supply. He noted that Rynjah has a population of no less than 16,000, whereas the current supply from the PHE department is adequate for only about 3,000 to 5,000 residents.
“As a result, many households are forced to purchase water regularly,” the Rangbah Shnong added.
Responding to queries, War said the locality currently relies on a borewell-based water supply scheme provided by the PHE, which is proving to be insufficient.
The Dorbar Shnong has proposed that the department explore alternative sources, including nearby springs, to meet the rising demand.
The inspection by PHE officials is expected to take place next week.
