SHILLONG, July 5: Stepping up its campaign for stricter migration controls, the Hynniewtrep Youth Council’s Sohiong Zone, accompanied by leaders from the Central Executive Committee, mounted a surprise ‘Sier Lapalang Operation’ at work sites across Sohiong and expelled roughly 50 migrant labourers found without valid papers.
The inspection, part of the HYC’s wider push for the Inner Line Permit (ILP), targeted construction hubs where out-of-state workers are frequently employed.
According to the organisation, none of those confronted could produce the required identity or work documents, and all were ordered to leave the area immediately.
Issuing a stern warning, the HYC told contractors and business owners that bringing in migrant labourers without proper documentation will not be tolerated.
The group signalled that such checks will intensify in the coming weeks as it continues to track the flow of migrants into the state.
It is pertinent to note that this operation adds to a series of recent HYC drives that have uncovered large numbers of undocumented workers, fuelling its argument that an ILP regime is needed to curb unchecked migration into Meghalaya.
