Shillong, July 7: The much-anticipated 21K Sohra International Half Marathon is set to return for its fourth edition on September 27, with organisers eyeing a record turnout of over 10,000 participants, marking a significant leap from previous years.
Announcing the event at a press conference on Monday, Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) General Secretary Finely Pariat said, “The first edition saw 2,800 runners, the second had 3,800, and last year we had 7,500. This year, we’re expecting the biggest participation yet.”
Jointly organised by the Meghalaya Athletics Association, MSOA, and the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, the event is recognised by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) and has become one of the state’s premier running events. A total budget of Rs 2.97 crore has been allocated for this year’s edition, with Rs 15.5 lakh in prize money up for grabs.
The 21K Elite Open (18+ years) category offers a top prize of Rs 1.5 lakh, followed by Rs 75,000 and Rs 50,000 for second and third places respectively, with equal prize money for both men’s and women’s categories.
The race route remains unchanged, starting from Laitsohpliah (6 km ahead of Mawkdok bridge) and finishing at Mawsmai (Nohsngithiang Falls viewpoint). Race categories include 21K, 10K, and the popular 5K Run for Fun.
MSOA Working President John F. Kharshiing confirmed that registration will close on September 10, and urged athletes across Meghalaya to register early. Registration can be done online or offline at the Sohra shop near the Petrol Pump at Lad Thanad.
Pariat also highlighted that the transportation of registered participants will make up the bulk of the event’s expenditure. He added that locals in Sohra are enthusiastic about the event, hoping it helps rejuvenate the region’s image and further establish it as a tourism-friendly destination.
“We believe the marathon will not just bring in runners but also promote Sohra’s natural beauty and potential as a top travel spot,” he added, in light of recent events that have affected the region’s reputation.
This year, the 60+ age category has been dropped due to limited past participation. The registration fees are as follows:
21K Elite Open & 21K Open Meghalayan (18+ years): Rs 1,000; 10K Open (18–40 years, 45–55 years, and 55+ years): Rs 200; 5K Run for Fun (Men & Women): Rs 50
On race day, roads leading to Sohra from Shillong will remain closed from 6 AM to 10 AM, and participants are advised to plan accordingly.
For detailed information on categories, routes, and registration, runners can visit the official registration website or contact the event helpline between 10 AM and 6 PM.
