SHILLONG, July 9: Several parts of Meghalaya have been experiencing an erratic power supply for the past few days as strong winds caused power lines to trip and hindered maintenance work.
Power supply was particularly erratic on Wednesday with people complaining about power cuts throughout the day.
Power Minister AT Mondal admitted that the weather has been a major disruptor.
“We are aware of the situation caused by strong winds in Shillong and other parts of the state in the past two days. The department is rectifying the faults. Repairs are underway,” Mondal said.
He noted that multiple areas have experienced sudden power cuts due to wind-induced faults.
The Minister clarified the department’s stand on prior communication to the public. “If it (power cut) is scheduled, then the department always informs. However, it is difficult to do so when it is a sudden occurrence,” he explained.
The lower-than-expected rainfall fuelled speculation over the readiness of power infrastructure, especially with Meghalaya’s dependence on hydroelectric sources.
However, Mondal sought to downplay this concern stating, “As of now, we are not in that situation. Let’s hope that things will be alright.”
On whether the current weather pattern poses a long-term challenge to the department, he said, “Don’t worry. Climate will change any day, so don’t be a pessimist.”
With an unpredictable weather and a vulnerable power grid, Meghalaya appears to be at the mercy of shifting climatic conditions, even as authorities work to keep the lights on.
