KYIV, July 11: Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, contrasts sharply between day and night. During the day, the city is lively, with crowded metros, children playing, and people enjoying life despite the war.
By night, it transforms into a battleground as Russia launches relentless drone and missile attacks, driving residents underground into bomb shelters.
The number of drone strikes has surged, with swarms of up to 700 drones becoming common, often leaving the city in darkness, pierced only by air defense fire.
The attacks are considered the most terrifying of the war, with many residents fearing for their lives. Despite the constant threat, Kyiv’s residents remain resilient, continuing daily routines like grabbing coffee or working out.
However, fear and exhaustion are constant companions. Some have grown numb to the danger, joking about the possibility of being rescued from rubble. For others, like Oleksandra Umanets with her young son, the subway shelter offers a sense of safety.
The attacks target civilian infrastructure, aiming to demoralize the population, but many in Kyiv refuse to succumb, showing remarkable solidarity and determination to live. (AP)
