SHILLONG, July 18: The Office of the Sohra Sub-Divisional Officer (Election) has prohibited the carrying of boulders and sand beyond permissible load limits and the transportation of these materials by trucks between 5 am and 8 pm towards the Shillong-Sohra road.
In an order, Sohra Civil Sub-Division Officer (SDO), Mark A. Challam, stated that numerous 16-wheeler sand and boulder-laden trucks have been reported to ply along the Shella-Sohra road with loads exceeding permissible norms.
Complaints have also been received from Sirdar, Sordar, Headmen and residents regarding these overloaded trucks being a nuisance and a danger to pedestrians.
The order highlighted that the movement of these trucks poses dangers to vehicular and pedestrian traffic along the route while also causing traffic jams, especially on sharp turns, with instances of overturned trucks on these bends reported.
Additionally, the movement of overloaded trucks has caused damage to newly constructed roads, leading to potholes and cracks on the surface.
Noting that overloaded trucks are a danger to public safety and normal traffic, the SDO said that the order was necessitated to protect the public and the infrastructure.
Meanwhile, the SDO has warned of legal action against the violators of the order, which comes into immediate effect.
