JOWAI, Aug 9: Members of the public, along with various groups, took part in a public meeting organised by Khooid Ya Ka Wah Myntdu (KYM) to discuss ways to protect and preserve the cleanliness of the Myntdu river. The river is a vital source of drinking water and irrigation for the people of Jowai and neighbouring areas. The meeting was held at the Chilliang Raij Community Hall, Jowai, on Saturday.
KYM president KL Pariat said the organisation has been actively working to maintain the cleanliness of the Myntdu river for the past five years, during which it has heard and witnessed public concerns over the river’s deteriorating condition.
Pariat urged landowners along the riverbanks to refrain from polluting the water, stressing the need to safeguard this essential resource for drinking and domestic use—particularly for future generations. He also called on authorities to strictly enforce regulations, including the prohibition of building houses within 100 metres of the river, as a key measure to protect its cleanliness.
He further stated that KYM has extended its support to the government through Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar, urging them to take proactive measures to improve and protect the riverbanks of the Myntdu, which serves as a lifeline for many communities.
The meeting also saw inputs and suggestions from KYM member Rupaia Lamar, Snar Laloo, SK Lato, senior citizens, village headmen, the president and general secretary of the Synjuk Waheh Chnong Ri Jaiñtia, representatives of Sein Raij Jowai, the president and general secretary of Synjuk Waheh Chnong Jowai, women’s organisations, civil society groups, members of the fishing community, and others.
Pariat concluded by announcing that following the upcoming meeting in Delhi on August 22, another meeting will be convened to share and discuss its outcomes.
