MAWKYRWAT, Aug 10: A day after the arrest of four Bangladeshi nationals including a Bangla policeman involved in the attack, kidnapping, and attempted murder of a youth from Rongdangai village in Ranikor, South West Khasi Hills, another Bangladeshi national suspected of involvement in the crime was arrested on Sunday, bringing the total number of arrested international criminals in the case to five.
Speaking to The Shillong Times, South West Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP) B Jyrwa said that with the help of villagers, police apprehended the latest suspect at around 7 am from Gilagora village near Khonjoy. The suspect has been identified as Mubarak Hussain from Kalagoan, Sonamganj, Bangladesh.
The incident occurred on August 8, 2025, when an armed group of suspected Bangladeshi criminals attacked and abducted 21-year-old Balsrang A. Marak from Rongdangai village. Following the attack, the police, along with the Border Security Force (BSF) and local residents, launched a massive search operation in the Khonjoy area along the Indo-Bangladesh international border.
On Saturday, four suspects were arrested, including one man who is allegedly a Bangladesh Police constable. One was captured by residents of Khonjoy village in the morning, while the other three were apprehended by police in a joint operation in the Chibak forest.
The four suspects arrested earlier were identified as Jangir Alom (25) of Sadar Jamalpur District, Bangladesh; Saen Hussain (30) of Narayangonj District, Bangladesh; Mefus Rahman (35) of Cummila District, Bangladesh; and Marufur Rahman (32) of Jamalpur District, Bangladesh, who claims to be a police constable.
The SP said that authorities are still verifying Marufur Rahman’s credentials, despite his admission that Bangladesh Police ID BP911139470 belongs to him. He is currently hospitalised after sustaining serious injuries when he was beaten by an angry crowd.
Jyrwa confirmed that among the five arrested, Marufur is the only one claiming to be a policeman.
Three of the accused—Jangir Alom, Saen Hussain, and Mefus Rahman—have been remanded to three days in police custody.
The SP added that police, along with the BSF and local residents, are continuing intensive search operations in the dense forests of the Khonjoy area to track down the remaining suspects involved in the case.
