Allegations of gross neglect, harassment and administrative misconduct

SHILLONG, Aug 18: Alleging “gross neglect, harassment, and administrative misconduct” at the National Skill Training Institute for Women (NSTI-W), Tura, the Mothers’ Union of Tura, along with concerned citizens of West Garo Hills, has written to Tura MP Saleng A Sangma seeking urgent parliamentary intervention in the matter.
In their representation, the Union highlighted serious lapses in hostel management, student safety, and staff appointments, which they alleged have endangered the well-being of female trainees.
One of the key concerns raised was the absence of a qualified residential hostel warden, leaving students without proper supervision or emergency support.
The Union also pointed to multiple health and hygiene hazards, including non-functional water purifiers and refrigerators, poor sanitation, lack of pest control, and inadequate mess facilities.
Calling for urgent remedial measures, the letter demanded the suspension of implicated officials, appointment of a qualified female residential warden, installation of 24/7 security, modernization of hostel infrastructure, and a parliamentary-level review of NSTIs across the Northeast.
Warning that the current conditions were “inhumane and in stark violation of the dignity and safety expected in a government-funded girls’ hostel,” the Union urged immediate corrective steps.
They further appealed to Sangma’s “conscience and duty” as a public representative, stressing that the institute—established in 1987 as the only central vocational training institute for women in the region—must not be allowed to deteriorate due to neglect and misuse.
