OSLO, Aug 19: Norwegian prosecutors announced Monday that Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been indicted on 32 charges, including rape, abuse in a close relationship, violence, death threats, and traffic violations.
Høiby, 28, could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. The charges stem from a lengthy investigation and involve allegations from two former partners — one accusing him of rape and abuse, and another of violent behavior.
State attorney Sturla Henriksbø stated that Høiby is not currently in custody and remains free pending trial, as there is no current legal basis for detaining him.
The trial is expected to begin around mid-January and last approximately six weeks, according to Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
Høiby is the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship and the stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, the heir to the Norwegian throne. Although closely connected to the royal family, Høiby holds no official royal title or duties.
His defense team said he takes the allegations seriously but denies most of the accusations, particularly those related to sexual abuse and violence. The Norwegian royal palace has declined to comment on the matter, saying only that the case is now in the hands of the judicial system. (AP)
