NONGPOH, Aug 25: The Mawhati Rural Community Secondary School, SSA, is set to receive financial assistance of Rs 8.05 lakh under the Chief Minister’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF) for the construction of its school building on a one-acre plot of land belonging to the institution.
The support was made possible through the intervention of local MLA Charles Marngar, who, along with the School Managing Committee (SMC), placed the matter before Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma. Responding to the request, the Chief Minister sanctioned the fund under his special scheme.
Established in 2006 under the management of Umsohlait Parish, the school was later handed over to the local community in 2016. Since its inception, the school has struggled without a proper building, operating instead from the gallery of the local sports club, generously provided by the village.
During an inspection visit after the celebration of Mothers’ Day for schoolchildren on August 22, 2025, MLA Marngar witnessed the challenges faced by the institution. Despite having reached the secondary level, the school continues to function in cramped classrooms, unlike neighbouring schools with better infrastructure.
The MLA also contributed Rs 1 lakh from his own resources towards teachers’ salaries for one academic year, assuring that such assistance will continue annually during his tenure.
While acknowledging that the sanctioned Rs 8.05 lakh may not be sufficient to fully meet secondary school standards, the SMC expressed its gratitude to the chief minister and the MLA, stating that additional support would still be required to complete the project.
Speaking to the media, Marngar stressed the urgent need for the school to have its own building and thanked the Chief Minister for promptly responding to the request. He added that efforts will continue to mobilise further resources through other government schemes to ensure the school’s development.
