SHILLONG, Sep 17: The state government has proposed to declare the David Scott Trail in Sohbar Sirdarship, East Khasi Hills, as a protected site.
Informing this, the Principal Secretary to the Arts and Culture department said that objections to the notification, if any, received within thirty days from the date of its issue, will be considered by the government.
It may be mentioned that the David Scott Trail is one of the oldest trekking routes in the state. It was named after David Scott, a British administrator sent to Northeast India during the colonial period. During his tenure, a horse cart trail was laid across the Khasi Hills and jungles from Assam to erstwhile Sylhet, in present-day Bangladesh. This route was primarily used by the British to ferry goods.
Stretching across 16 km from Mawphlang to Lad Mawphlang, the trail is considered a moderate trek, taking about 4-5 hours to complete depending on individual capacity. Starting from Mawphlang village, it winds across hills and valleys, with both ascents and descents.
The scenic beauty of the district is reflected along the way—rolling green hills, valleys, crystal-clear waters in natural pools, and clean air—making it a thrilling and memorable adventure.
