GUWAHATI, Jan 15: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday refrained from commenting on the proceedings in Singapore’s coroner’s court on the death of singer Zubeen Garg, even as he stated that the investigation in Singapore and the probe in Assam were separate processes, adhering to their respective legal frameworks.
“Singapore Police had submitted a report after completing their investigation, which was examined by the coroner’s court there. But our investigation is different,” the chief minister told mediapersons.
Notably, a police investigator informed the coroner’s court on Wednesday that Garg was “severely intoxicated” and refused to wear a life vest when he drowned while swimming near Lazarus Island in Singapore on September 19 last year.
According to reports, the inquiry in Singapore is examining the circumstances leading to the singer’s death.
Sarma further cautioned that any political statement on the matter could be interpreted differently by people.
“Whatever you have read in the media, I have read the same. Since the matter is sub-judice, politicians should not interfere. Hence, it would not be appropriate for me to comment any further on the issue,” he said.
The report submitted to the Singapore court said the singer was “severely intoxicated” and witnesses saw him trying to swim back to the yacht when he went limp and began floating with his face in the water.
