SHILLONG, April 10: The UDP on Friday reaffirmed its support for granting Khasi full official language status in Meghalaya and pressing for its inclusion in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
In a statement, UDP general secretary Titosstarwell Chyne backed the demand by the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) to elevate Khasi from an associate official language—under the Meghalaya State Language Act, 2005—to a full-fledged official language. “The UDP has always stood firmly behind the demand to recognise Khasi as a full official language of Meghalaya. This is not only about language, but about safeguarding our identity, culture, and heritage,” Chyne said.
He argued that the inclusion of Khasi in the Eighth Schedule is both justified and necessary, noting that other regional languages such as Bodo and Manipuri have already received constitutional recognition.
“If other indigenous languages of the Northeast can find a place in the Eighth Schedule, there is no reason why Khasi should be left behind. We will continue to pursue this matter at all levels,” he added.
