SHILLONG, April 19: The Shillong Traffic Police (STP) penalised 91 motor vehicle defaulters during an intensified enforcement drive across the city on Saturday night, realising a total fine of Rs 1.02 lakh.
The operation targeted various offences, including illegal modifications to exhaust systems and lights, the use of black window tints, and drunk driving.
A primary focus of the check was two-wheelers fitted with altered silencers that produce excessive noise, often disturbing residents late at night. Officials also cracked down on reckless riding practices, such as dangerous overtaking.
East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem on Sunday said that several vehicles were detained and violators fined as per the law. He reiterated that under the Motor Vehicles Act, the permissible sound limit for motorcycle exhausts is capped at 80 decibels; any modification exceeding this limit is illegal.
The crackdown follows growing public concern over noise pollution and a rise in road accidents involving two-wheelers. The STP has previously signaled a zero-tolerance approach toward such violations, notably using a road roller to destroy seized illegal exhausts at the Police Reserve.
The SP stated the ongoing initiative is aimed at curbing noise pollution while enhancing overall road safety in the city.
