SHILLONG, April 21: The United Democratic Party is yet to decide whether it will contest the upcoming Shillong Lok Sabha by-election, even as it readied its list of candidates for the GHADC polls.
Cabinet Minister and UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh indicated that the party has made significant progress in identifying candidates for the GHADC elections, with a positive response from aspirants, including in the Garo Hills region. He said the party will make efforts to ensure strong performance in the council polls.
Lyngdoh stated that the party is yet to hold a meeting to take a final call on whether it will contest the parliamentary by-election.
He said that discussions will be held to review the progress of candidate selection, although the poll dates have not been announced.
On the possibility of fielding a common opposition candidate for the Shillong Lok Sabha seat, Lyngdoh said that there has been no such discussion within the party so far.
He also dismissed suggestions that some party legislators had advised against contesting the by-election to focus on the 2028 Assembly elections, stating that no such views have been formally expressed.
