SHILLONG, May 3: The Voice of the People Party (VPP) on Sunday dismissed claims that it had suffered a setback following the recent mass joining of leaders and supporters from various political parties, including the VPP, to the National People’s Party (NPP) in Mawkyrwat.
VPP leader Batskhem Myrboh said the party continues to gain support and rejected the narrative that the development reflected a shift away from the VPP. He questioned assertions that VPP supporters were moving to other parties, stating that such claims are often highlighted selectively.
Myrboh said while it may be possible for “one or two” individuals to shift allegiance, parties do not acknowledge when they themselves lose support in large numbers. He maintained that the VPP’s base remains intact and growing.
He claimed that leaders from other parties had approached him to express support for the VPP, but added that he does not publicise such interactions and would instead let election results speak for themselves.
He further stated that individuals who join the VPP for “selfish interests” are bound to leave, adding that the party is not concerned about such exits.
The response came a day after thousands of leaders and supporters from the United Democratic Party, Hill State People’s Democratic Party, Congress and VPP joined the NPP at a meeting held at the Nativity Playground in Mawkyrwat.
The development coincided with indications that Mawkyrwat MLA Renikton L Tongkhar is set to return to the NPP, where he had begun his political career.
