SHILLONG, July 6: The Meghalaya government has completed renovation works in 1,391 Government Lower Primary (LP) schools under its flagship Mission Education programme, with work on the remaining 216 schools currently in progress.
According to the government, 1,607 LP schools across the state were taken up for repair and renovation, with over 86 per cent of the work already completed. The initiative is part of a larger effort to strengthen school infrastructure across Meghalaya.
Mission Education is being implemented in all districts and covers Government lower primary, upper primary, secondary and higher secondary schools. The state has committed nearly Rs 1,000 crore towards the renovation, construction and upgradation of Government schools, while education continues to receive the highest allocation in the State Budget.
The programme is being implemented in phases. Under Phase I, 191 LP and seven Upper Primary (UP) school buildings were completed, followed by 100 LP schools under Phase II. Another 117 LP schools are being constructed under Phase III, while over 180 new LP and secondary school buildings are currently under tendering in Phase IV to replace ageing infrastructure.
Overall, the government said more than 2,000 LP and UP school infrastructure projects have been undertaken under Mission Education.
Renovation works include repairs to roofs, walls, flooring, doors, windows and other structural components, while newly constructed and upgraded schools are being equipped with additional classrooms, furniture, libraries and improved sanitation facilities.
Upper Primary schools have also benefited from the programme, including Government UPS Mowkaiaw in West Jaintia Hills and Nogorpara Government UPS in South West Garo Hills.
The government said progress under the mission is being documented through school-wise records, including geo-tagged and time-stamped photographs. It maintained that isolated images of schools yet to be renovated do not reflect the overall progress achieved across the state.
With nearly 15,000 elementary schools in Meghalaya, the government said the transformation of school infrastructure is being carried out in a phased manner rather than all at once.
