AJYWO demands immediate repair of Sonapur bridge

JOWAI: The All Jaintia Youth Welfare Organisation (AJYWO) has demanded immediate repair of the Sonapur Bridge over Lukha River at Sonapur village on NH-44 which is in a state of ruins putting the life of commuters at great risk.
The AJYWO, while expressing concern over the deplorable condition of the bridge, informed that the government should take immediate action to repair the main bridge that links mainland India with Mizoram, Tripura and Barak Valley of Assam.
AJYWO activists recently inspected the bridge and parts of the National Highway from Tongseng to Sonapur and called for urgent repair of the highway by the PWD.
JSU demands committee for protection of Myntdu
Meanwhile, the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU) held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, West Jaintia Hills, recently and requested constitution of a special committee for protection of the Myntdu River which is a source of drinking water for Jowai town.
“We suggested that the committee should comprise of headmen and prominent persons of Jowai town besides NGO members,” the JSU said in a statement.
The JSU also sought the active cooperation of the JHADC and the people for protection of the river. “We don’t want to see River Myntdu end up like the Wahumkhrah River,” it added.
