TURA: The death anniversary of an unsung Garo freedom fighter, Lt Akella A’gitok Sangma was observed at Rondupara Village near Dadenggre in West Garo Hills on Thursday. The programme was organized by Akella A’gitok Sangma Death Anniversary Observation Committee (AASDAOC).
Lt Akella A’gitok Sangma was born to Lt Sokre A’gitok Sangma and Lt Bolsin Marak in Rondupara village round about the year 1831 (actual birth year not known). When the British intruded into Rondupara village in 1872 it is said that Sangma led the resistance against the foreigners managing to kill four dozen British soldiers at one time. He was eventually arrested and taken to Misi Bazar (now Tikrikilla) and tortured which came to be known as Kella Bazar from then onwards.
It was only later that the place was named Tikrikilla.
President of the GSU Western Zone (North), Rupa M Marak while speaking on the occasion asked the gathering to maintain peace and harmony in their village and to avoid involving in anti social activities.
Later, the Chief Guest also unveiled a painting of Lt Akella A’gitok Sangma.
