SHILLONG: NEIGRIHMS is in the process of submitting the compliance report after rectifying the deficiencies in the post graduate degrees of MD Anesthesiology, MD Radiology and MD Medicine.
In a statement on Thursday, the public relations officer of NEIGRIHMS, Kawal Krishen Pandita, said some deficiencies have been pointed out by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and it had sought compliance report in the next four weeks.
In response to the news report that appeared in this daily, NEIGRIHMS said the MCI inspection of any institute is a continuous process and for any postgraduate degree to be recognised, the approval of the ministry is sought first and then MCI’s approval is taken.
“After three years, i.e. at the time of examination of the PGs, MCI again inspects the institute. In these inspections some deficiencies may be pointed out and the institute concerned is asked to take remedial measures within a time limit,” the statement said.
The institute received six letters from MCI recently including the one leaked to the media about the Department of Anesthesia.
“In these communications, MD Pathology, MD Microbiology and MS Gynae/Obstetrics are declared recognised by MCI for the next five years, which is good news for us. But for MD Anesthesiology, MD Radiology and MD Medicine, some deficiencies have been pointed out by MCI and have sought compliance report in the next four weeks. The institute is in the process of submitting the compliance report with necessary corrections being made,” the statement said.
It also said due to the typical geographical location of NEIGRIHMS, there is always a problem of getting the requisite faculty, but added that the institute is regularly conducting interviews and advertising the faculty posts.
Medical College and Cancer Centre
NEIGRIHMS is also strengthening its services and in the process of upgradation, the medical college building is coming up with a capacity for 100 students and accompanying hostels for 600 persons.
The PRO said the building for a 252-bed regional cancer centre is under construction and will be ready by October 2019.
It will be a state-of-the-art cancer centre with all hi-tech equipment installed to take care of patients from the North East.
Nursing college extension
NEIGRIHMS further said the nursing college extension block is also coming up which will further boost manpower requirement in nursing.
“All these infrastructure projects will generate employment opportunities for the people of Meghalaya,” it added.
