SHILLONG: The four police constables who assaulted a coal trader in Amlarem have been suspended sources informed. Police authorities have also written to the Government to suspend the Additional Superintendent of Police (Addl SP) Jaintia Hills who is also the SDPO Amlarem for his unlawful behaviour in the matter, the sources said.
The coal trader, Larmon Tariang, had on November 10 lodged a complaint with Amlarem Police against the Additional SP, Nazarius Lamare, and his police team for allegedly assaulting him and looting Rs 1.30 lakh from his possession at Amlarem on November 9.
Sources informed that following the complaint against Lamare the Police department conducted an enquiry and have now recommended to the Government that he be placed under suspension.
It is learnt that the Police department has written to the Government that the required checking of coal trucks by all concerned departments should occur at a single point and that police would provide security at that point, sources said.
This recommendation is to ensure that trucks do not stop at several different points as it gives rise to corrupt practices, the sources said.
“Police have been instructed not to check overloading as that is not their brief,” the sources informed, adding that police have been told to book trucks only for violation of the law.
