SHILLONG: After the last budget session that concluded in April, the next Assembly session was to be held in September, but Speaker AT Mondal is yet to get any intimation from Chief Minister Mukul Sangma.
The Speaker said on Friday that normally a session is held every six months and since there was a special session in June, the government may be considering holding it at a later stage.
He, however, hoped that the next session will be held in November as December and January will be close to the polls.
There were media reports that the legislators who are keen to shift allegiance to other political parties may do so after the next Assembly session in September before the state goes to polls sometime in February next year.
When asked whether the delay in fixing the date by the government was to prevent exodus of legislators from the Congress, the Speaker replied in the negative and added that there was nothing political in the delay in scheduling the date.
Sources, however, said the Congress fears that if the session is held in September, there are chances of many legislators resigning which may lead to a constitutional crisis.
According to sources, if the Government does not have majority at that time, this may lead to President’s Rule till the next Assembly polls, which may affect the poll prospects of the Congress.
