Plan for state’s bio-diversity preservation mooted

SHILLONG:  Meghalaya deputy chief minister R.C. Laloo on Monday underlined the need to protect and preserve the rich bio-diversity of the state and make it more sustainable for the future generation.
Speaking as chief guest during the North East Regional Brainstorming Workshop on Bio-Resources Development and Sustainable Utilisation at NEC Auditoriumhere, Laloo said there was a need to identify the causes for reduction in bio-diversity and bio-resources and chalk out plans to protect and preserve them besides judiciously harnessing the biological resources for sustainable development.
He also hoped that the workshop would serve as a platform for various stakeholders for developing frameworks for sustainable development of the ecosystem and bio-resources of Northeast India in general and Meghalaya in particular through biotechnological approaches.
Earlier, Laloo inaugurated the two-day workshop. It was jointly organised by the Bio-Resources Development Centre (BDRC), government of Meghalaya and the department of biotechnology, Union ministry of science and technology in collaboration with NEC, DoNER ministry, North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project,  Institute of Natural Resources Management, among others.
Member of NEC, C. K. Das, NEC secretary, Ram Muivah, adviser, department of biotechnology, government of India, Mohd. Aslam, among other dignitaries was also present at the inaugural programme.
