SHILLONG: The two-lane Shillong bypass starting from Umiam-Mawryngkneng will be widened to four-lane under the Centre’s Bharatmala project.
Informing this, PWD Secretary (Roads & Buildings) PR Marwein told The Shillong Times that the Centre would estimate the cost of the 49-km road project.
“It will be implemented by National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. The state government will be there to assist them such as in the process of land acquisition, getting clearances from Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, forest clearances etc,” he said.
To avoid congestion, the central government is contemplating building bypasses in important cities of the country under the Bharatmala order.
It has identified 28 ring roads, 125 choke points and 66 congestion points under Phase-1 of the Bharatmala Pariyojana where interventions have been planned in Guwahati, Imphal, Silchar, Shillong, Dibrugarh, Dimapur and Aizawl.
A budget outlay of Rs 5,35,000 crore has been earmarked for Phase-I proposed to be executed over a period of five years, from 2017-18 to 2021-22.
