SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress protested against rise in prices of fuel and other things at Congress Bhavan in the city on Saturday.
However, other than MPCC general secretary Manash Das Gupta, none of the state Congress leaders or MLAs was present during the protest against price hike organised by the Mahila Congress in the city on Saturday.
Neither CLP leader Mukul Sangma nor MPCC president Celestine Lyngdoh was present to spearhead the protest at Congress Bhavan causing criticism from a few party supporters. Not a single Congress legislator was present on the occasion.Youth Congress leader Richard Marak came after the protest.
The women’s wing criticised the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for increase in prices of petrol and petroleum products.
The members shouted slogans like “Rahul Gandhi Jindabad, Narendra Modi down down” and raised placards demanding that the Centre roll back the prices of cooking gas, diesel, petrol and railway fare.
Talking to reporters, president of the Mahila Congress Joplin Scott Shylla said the increased price of petroleum products is affecting the common man and the government should bring it down.
Shylla also questioned the low price of export of petroleum products when there is a steep rise in price in the country.
“The Prime Minister’s promises on black money and demonetisation have failed and the country is witnessing rise in crimes and atrocities against women and children every day and they are not safe now,” she added.
The Mahila Congress will write to the MDA government and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on price rise to demand relief measures.
