NEW DELHI: More than 120 people, including many from Meghalaya and other northeastern states, were arrested in Noida in connection with a fake call centre.
Noida police said they busted the call centre, which duped US citizens, on Thursday night.
A raid was conducted at the call centre, located in Sector 63 in Noida, on a tip-off and several telephone operators were questioned.
“The callers would tell Americans that there were problems with their social security numbers, a nine-digit identification number issued to US citizens, and solicit money to fix it,” the police said.
Over the past few months, about a dozen fake call centres have been busted in Noida and scores of people were arrested for duping foreigners, including Americans and Canadians, officials said.
Many among the arrested were from the North East.
One of the key accused told the police during interrogation that they hired workers from the North East because of their English spoken power.
Noida police had received complaints about such frauds on email from the US after which a raid was conducted by the joint team on the call centre which was active in the city for around three months.
