Shillong: The expedition coordinator and expert speleologist from Switzerland, Thomas Arbenz has contested that Krem Um Ladaw as mentioned in this daily on Wednesday is not the deepest shaft in Meghalaya.
The report had mentioned about the discovery of the new species of fish after the cavers found the country’s deepest shaft cave, Krem Um Ladaw.
Speaking to The Shillong Times on Wednesday, Arbenz said, “Looking at the shape of the vertical bits of the cave, there is no way we can call it the deepest shaft in Meghalaya. It is more a sequence of shafts and there are several caves in Jaintia Hills that are similar.” He further added, “ Deepest shafts as we see them are single drops and therefore the credit for the deepest shaft still goes to Krem Shrieh (Tangnub) 97 meters and Tiger Mouth Shaft in Krem Khlaw which is 91 meters.
The team comprising international cave explorers encountered a new species of cave fish in Jaintia Hills in February and it appears to be the largest known cave fish in the world.
