GH militancy

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has criticized the NCP for blaming the present Government for the militancy problem in Garo Hills.

Talking to reporters here on Wednesday, the Chief Minister said the main reason which helped the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) to recruit young men and women is their desperation due to the backwardness of the region and lack of job opportunities.

The one-week-long GNLA-sponsored bandh in three Garo Hills districts entered the third day on Wednesday and normal life was affected in the entire Garo Hills region.

“The politicians of the past should be held responsible for the growth of militancy in Garo Hills. None of the greats in the past had taken any initiative to develop the region and create avenues and opportunities for young generation,” the Chief Minister said.”In fact, one of the political stalwarts of Garo Hills, who was in power for so many years, is now leading the NCP,” Dr Sangma said adding that several insurgent groups — ALMA and ANVC – were active in Garo Hills in the past.He said the present Government should be given the credit for taking various initiatives to create employment opportunities and avenues especially for the younger generation who are the future of the State.
