Ecology conservation accorded top priority at Khelo India: CEO

Rijiju, Sonowal to grace closing ceremony on Jan 22

GUWAHATI: Conservation of environment and “minimum use” of plastic have been accorded top priority at the ongoing Khelo India Youth Games here, which has proved to be an ideal platform for budding sporting talent.

Speaking about the conduct the 13-day event here on Sunday, Khelo India Youth Games chief executive officer, Avinash Joshi Joshi informed the media that the officials have focussed on conserving the environment along with hosting various sporting events successfully.

“We have roped in the services of 15 electric buses for inter-venue transfers during this competition. We have minimised the use of single-use plastic and ensured the responsible disposal of plastic material. We have successfully carried out plastic waste management during the tournament,” Joshi said.

As it is, the third edition of the Youth Games created history even before the first competition got under way here on January 12.If not the world’s, it became India’s first digital games, going completely paperless, finishing all their processes on their high-tech digital platform.

The CEO informed that the closing ceremony of the Youth Games will be held at the Sarusajai Sports Complex in Guwahati on January 22, 2020.

“The closing ceremony will be held at 6 pm on January 22 and Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be the chief guest. He will be accompanied by the Union sports minister Kiren Rijiju. We are expecting a number of dignitaries to attend the closing ceremony,” Joshi said.

“The closing ceremony will also witness celebrities from Bollywood and Assam and a group from China will perform Chinese martial arts. Entry will be free for everyone,” he added.

The CEO further said a giant LED screen would also be put up for youngsters to have a stadium-like experience.

Meanwhile, Sports Authority of India secretary, Rohit Bharadwaj complimented the government of Assam for arranging Olympic-like sporting arenas for the Khelo India Youth Games.

“I must compliment the government of Assam. The playing arenas are almost Olympic like. The shooting range used for the tournament is one of the best in the world. It’s so wonderful to have such a state-of-the-art facility in our country,” said Bhardwaj.
