Meghalaya forms CM’s Task Force on Economy

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Cabinet on Friday notified the formation of the Chief Minister’s Taskforce on Economy for revival of the economy post COVID-19.

Speaking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong said that the Cabinet was briefed by the Planning Department and Chief Minister on the proposal for constituting the working groups and executive committee of the task force.

The Executive Committee will be headed by Chief Minister Conrad Sangma as the chairman and the members of this Executive Committee are: Deputy Chief Minister, Minister of Commerce and Industries, Minister of Agriculture, Chief Secretary, Secretary of NEC, Chairman of Farmer Commission, Prof David R Syiemlieh, Prof Stephen Dercom from Oxford University, Srishir Bajoria, chairman of IIM Shillong. Other experts would be co-opted by the committee.

The Member secretary of the committee is IAS officer, Dr. Vijay Kumar.

According to Tynsong, the committee would have six working groups from different disciplines. The first working group has been constituted is under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary, Rebecca V Suchinang who will look after finance, investment and revenue.

The second working group for infrastructure and labour has been constituted under chairmanship of Principal Secretary, D P Wahlang.

The third working group would look after the primary sector, agriculture and allied service under the chairmanship of Dr P Shakeel Ahmed while the fourth group will look after rural development, poverty alleviation and livelihood and it would be headed by Sampath Kumar.

The fifth working group which has been constituted to look after the industries and trade would be headed by M R Synrem while the working group on tourism entrepreneurship and skills would be headed be headed by Vijay Kumar.

“These working groups will nominate and invite experts in each working group and they will submit the proposal from all these three sectors to the Executive Committee for its perusal and thereafter it will be taken to the Cabinet for final approval,” Tynsong said.
