SHILLONG: The Federation of All Meghalaya Adhoc Secondary School Teachers’ Association (FAMASSTA) has urged the Education department to reduce the syllabus for Class X by taking up only important topics.
The association, in a statement, also expressed exasperation over the “digital divide in the society”, saying that most of the students in rural areas lack access to smart phones, computers and proper internet connectivity.
“Without a doubt, online classes are just a substitute but could not cater to the needs and understanding of a child,” the association said.
The FAMASSTA has requested the Education department through the MBoSE to consider shortening the courses of studies for Class X for the year 2020 by selecting only important topics from different subjects.
According to the association, the course is too vast for the students to cover within few months, ahead of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examinations 2021.
“Shortening of chapters will lighten the burden of the students and teachers and it will also enable the teachers to emphasise more on the important topics,” the association said.
