Nobel Peace Prize winner no more
Dublin: Former Irish politician and Nobel Peace Prize winner John Hume died on Monday at the age of 83, his family said in a statement. He passed away in the early hours of Monday at the Owen Mor nursing home in Londonderry, reports the BBC.
The former teacher and of the highest-profile politicians in Northern Ireland for more than 30 years, came to prominence during the Civil Rights Movement in 1968.
He was one of the founding members of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) in 1970.
Hume, who won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1998, had been suffering from dementia for many years. (IANS)
Hundreds without power in Florida
Miami: Some 1,840 people in Florida remained without power because of the tropical storm Isaias, local media reported.
Florida Power & Light (FPL) said its crew had been working throughout the night to restore power to some 20,000 customers as of Sunday, reports Xinhua news agency.
The affected areas include Broward County, Palm Beach County, Miami-Dade, Indian River, and St. Lucie County, according to the FPL power outage tracker map.
Isaias, a Category 1 hurricane, is making a slow approach to Florida and is expected to hit the East Coast as far north as New England later this week. (IANS)
Egypt churches reopen
Cairo: Egypt’s churches are reopening their doors to the faithful on Monday for the first time in more than four months due to a coronavirus lockdown.
The Coptic Orthodox Church said in a statement that it would receive the faithful in its churches with restrictions that include social distancing and wearing masks. Other churches are also reopening across the Arab World’s most populous county, which has seen a steady decline in coronavirus infections in the past two weeks. Christians constitute around 10% of Egypt’s predominantly Muslim 100 million people. (AP)
Indian killed in Nepal landslides
Kathmandu: An Indian national is among 10 people killed in landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in Nepal’s Sindhupalchowk district, police said on Monday. Eight labourers died in a landslide in Melamchi area near China border on Sunday. Seven of the deceased were residents of Birgunj metropolis, while one was an Indian national, police said. According to police, they were sleeping in a tin-roofed shelter when the landslide hit. Rescuers dug through the mud and took out all the eight bodies. (PTI)
