TURA, Nov 30: Members of the Garo Graduates Union, a body of graduates from the Garo community, have been asked to step forward and lend a hand towards the upliftment of the literacy rate of schools in Garo Hills.
The literacy rate among many schools in the Garo Hills region, especially those in the rural areas have been dismal for the past many years owing to various factors, including absence of teachers, infrastructure, among others.
Addressing the 53rd annual general conference of the Garo Graduates Union at Tura’s Mason Phillips Academy last Saturday, former Chairman of the Meghalaya Public Service Commission and retired civil servant, LR Sangma, raised concern about the low literacy level and the need to uplift it.
Another former MPSC chairman and the incumbent Dean of ICFAI University, Viola Sonatchi B Sangma, presented a paper on the topic ‘The Garos and the importance of Garo Culture’ during the daylong conference, while senior member and author of several books, Praboth M Sangma, released the 33rd issue of the GGU’s magazine Mikaoa.
